Jewish man Georg escapes imprisonment by present-day Nazis and flees to Marseille. In a desperate move to get out of the country, he assumes the identity of an author named Weidel, who recently committed suicide and has a Mexican visa. His plans to leave by ship in three weeks are complicated when he meets and falls in love with Weidel's estranged wife, Marie. He tries to find a way to take her with him without her realizing his deceit.
