Personnel: Tony Valentino (vocals, guitar); John Fleck (vocals, trumpet); Larry Tamblyn (vocals, keyboards); Dick Dodd (vocals, drums).
Liner Note Author: Jeff Jarema.
Arranger: Ed Cobb.
The Standells' record company were no fools. When their mildly salacious single "Try It" was honest-to-goodness banned in Boston--guess the city's moral leaders hadn't appreciated that crack about "frustrated women" in "Dirty Water"--as well as a few other places, the Standells not only showed up on the Art Linkletter show to "debate" about the risque tune, but the album TRY IT was rush-released with the word BANNED! in huge letters on the front cover!
The song--written by Joey Levine, later the singer and songwriter of a seemingly endless list of bubblegum hits--is of course utterly mild and rather playful by today's standards, but it's also one of the Standells' catchiest tunes ever. The rest of the disc is similarly low-key but diverts from the punky standards of the Standells' earlier records, with the exception of the scorching "Riot On Sunset Strip," from the film of the same name.
