Although initially a lot of the attention garnered by the New Riders of the Purple Sage was generated by the group's association with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, the band had a lengthy career long after that connection had run its course. In the late '80s and early '90s, NRPS, led in various configurations by this time by John Dawson and multi-instrumentalist Rusty Gauthier, recorded several albums for Relix Records, and this two-disc set collects some of the best tracks from that time period. Highlights -- some of them drawn from live performances -- include the signature "Panama Red," a jazzy version of "Ripple," and the lovely "Its OK to Cry," and they show an energetic and adventuresome little country-rock band that teetered on the edge of semi-electric bluegrass on more than a few occasions. ~ Steve Leggett
