Personnel includes: Malcolm McLaren, Bootzilla Orchestra.
The third in Malcolm McLaren's continuing series of oddball musical hybrids, 1989's WALTZ DARLING finds the artist provocateur (you couldn't exactly call him a singer, songwriter, or producer in any traditional sense) blending three disparate styles into one. There's deep house, the then- newly fashionable dance style; funk-rock, with appearances by Dave Stewart, Jeff Beck, and Bootsy Collins; and a full orchestra. The resulting blend shouldn't work, but it largely does.
The mix of Beck's muscular guitar work, Collins' walloping bass, the sawing strings and the steady rhythmic pulse makes WALTZ DARLING sound like a slightly more outre version of Giorgio Moroder's work with Donna Summer and Sparks back in the late '70s, with better keyboard technology and a goofier sense of humor. Note that "Deep in Vogue" predates Madonna's similar "Vogue" by nearly a full year.
