YOU CAN'T DO THAT ONSTAGE ANYMORE, VOL. 1 is the first in the series of assorted live recordings spanning Frank Zappa's entire career, from The Mothers of Invention on. Assembled by the man himself, the series was compiled with an eye towards fans already familiar with his body of work. The songs for the most part had original studio versions, and their inclusion was determined by whether or not they shed any new light on a particular composition or lineup of the band. Previously unreleased numbers range from variations on familiar themes ("Babette") or topical excerpts particular to a certain tour or show ("Diseases Of The Band"), as well as bits of audio verite ("The Florida Airport Tape"). There are a handful of selections from the Mothers in '69, with the bulk of the two-hour set being his '70s and '80s ensembles--in fact a clear but unstated purpose with the series was to show the instrumental prowess of his post-MOI ensembles.
