The sci-fi drama Z for Zachariah marked composer/cellist Heather McIntosh's second collaboration with film director Craig Zobel, having composed music for the 2012 thriller Compliance. Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, the film's chamber-orchestral score includes an organ piece performed by the lead character on screen. McIntosh fortifies strings, horns, organ, and harp with distorted electronic and acoustic instrument noise to anxious effect. The recording features Jeremy Thal (the National, Kenny Werner) on French horn and Mary Lattimore (Sharon Van Etten, Thurston Moore) on harp. ~ Marcy Donelson
