Yellowman ruled dancehall in the early '80s, scoring hit after hit for producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes. In the years directly following Bob Marley's death, Yellowman almost single-handedly moved reggae music away from The Wailers' blueprint of conscious lyrics, luscious harmonies, and Rasta redemption. Yellowman's new style used taut, hard-edged rhythm tracks and shifted the lyrical emphasis towards sex, comedy, and non-stop boasting.
ZUNGGUZUNGGUGUZUNGGUZENG! is one of the best releases of Yellowman's career, featuring great backing tracks by The Roots Radics and The Hi Times Band, wicked production from Junjo and Errol Thompson, and loads of The Yellow One's patented chats. The title track proved to be one of his most enduring hits, but there are many equally strong tunes here-especially "Who Can Make the Dance Ram," which successfully mixes Sammy Davis, Jr. with "Three Blind Mice." This album also proved that Yellowman is more than just a sex-addicted braggart. His rootical lyrics to "Can't Hide From Jah" and "Jah Jah Are We Guiding Star" are some of the most cultural toasts he ever recorded.
